Social Protection

Social protection, provided by the staff and volunteers of the Alternative Care Center. They are dealing with legal issues related to personal documents, disability, and independent place of residence and are integrating centre residents in new environment and society out of public care institutions.

Social Education

Social education ("Do as I do") is promoted by living in a family-type group. Residents learn to obey common rules and to undertake their responsibilities. They learn from other young people, so the social education is provided in a way that is easy for them to understand.

Family Therapy

The residents are taught the art of family therapy - the skill to live in a small family-model. It is ensured by living in the Alternative Care Center Žēlsirdības māja, because the Care Center is located in a family house with common household. The residents learn from the family members to develop family-like relationships, to achieve necessary skills, and to understand the values of marriage and family.

Occupational Therapy

The alternative work in the household of Žēlsirdības māja and subsidized work places not only teaches the skill to undertake responsibility but also gives satisfaction. The residents work mainly as cooks, pastry-cooks, farmers and auxiliary workers in all the branches of Žēlsirdības māja, producing the products for self use.

Animal-assisted Therapy

Improving mental health with the help of animals. It is a vital part in the model of alternative care. In the contact with animals, the residents can enjoy the love that they have not received from other people. The residents are now breeding 1 horse, 7 cows, 4 calves, 137 chickens, rabbits, 6 dogs, and 14 cats. Caring for animals gives the sense of responsibility.

Christian Therapy

Žēlsirdības māja organizes regular Bible studies and religious debates that help to develop faith and trust, reduce depressive helplessness and teach to repay in kind and to understand who is the one who truly loves them.

Socio-psychological Promotion

Staff and volunteers of the Alternative Care Center Žēlsirdības māja invite the residents to individual talks and consultations, assess their independancy and prepare suggestions.

Organizing Summer Holidays

Thematic weeks that promote socialization of disabled young people.

Education and Experience

Education and experience for independent life.The residents are involved in professional training courses. They get the understanding about family-like relationships, acquire the skills for independent life and work, and learn to communicate with other people in society.

Lectures and Educational Seminars

Lectures and educational seminars for disabled children`s parents and other persons who are closely related to this target group.
